This course introduces the fundamentals important to the discipline of financial planning. Students will acquire an understanding of the concepts and applications associated with financial calculations and the analysis of financial statements. The basic concepts of contracting and family law are covered followed by an analysis of government-sponsored benefit programs.

This course introduces students to basic income tax laws and moves into a more advanced understanding, as it relates to areas of financial planning. A review of the professional and ethical responsibilities associated with the role of a financial planner and an understanding of the structures and services within the financial industry are reviewed. Different forms of business structure are explored in depth, along with an understanding of trusts.

Designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications related to the concepts of managing risk and retirement planning, this course covers products, issues, and practices in the area of insurance and retirement. Included is an understanding of the risk management process along with the retirement planning process moving through the wealth accumulation phase into retirement.

Students will review the basics of economics and investing along with an understanding of investment products. Investment planning and key areas of personal financial management are explored. The course concludes with estate planning fundamentals, concepts and applications.

This course is designed to provide financial advisors with practical information on the laws of the various jurisdictions that affect their practice. The course provides examples of the operation of the law on financial advisors’ affairs and their relationship with clients and the financial service organizations with which they conduct business.

This course is the culmination of all of the courses in the CLU program. As such, information presented draws upon the technical knowledge developed in the other courses. The emphasis in this course is on the application of the knowledge gained in the other courses and on the planning process rather than just technical details. The program is designed to assist financial advisors in identifying problems, gathering comprehensive data and planning integrated solutions, essential components in their clients’ financial and estate planning.

Completion of this course involves the completion of two narrative assignments as well as a final exam.
Please note that the final exam in this course is a proctored paper exam for all candidates. The exam consists of questions requiring brief written responses, including questions that are based on one or more case studies. The exam is written once per semester.

Ongoing Designation Maintenance Requirements
Upon successful completion of the CLU program, students will be required to apply to the Institute for authorization to use the CLU designation. CLU advisors are required to re-apply annually for the continued right to use and maintain the CLU designation. The CLU designation is subject to an annual professional fee.
Students who have obtained their CLU designation may choose to write the FPSC’s Financial Planning Exam 1 (FPE1) under the FPSC’s Prior Credential Policy. Students who wish to obtain their CFP designation must complete an approved Capstone Course and pass the FPSC’s Financial Planning Exam 2 (FPE2).
