Welcome

There has been a fair bit in the news lately about a small number of people in the financial services industry breaching ethical guidelines. To be a professional, you must put your client’s interests first. You should only recommend solutions to a client’s insurance or other needs that you would consider for yourself and your family.

Below are some questions on ethics and agent conduct for your consideration.

1. What is true regarding the CLHIA’s advertising guidelines?

  1. Illustrations should use only guaranteed interest factors.
  2. Terminology must be clear and consumer-friendly.
  3. Where adverse experience can affect a particular feature of a policy, that feature should never be illustrated.
  4. Agents can make up, create and have published their own advertisements as long as they are paid for by the agent.

2. What are examples of rebating?

  1. Agent offers to pay all or a portion of the client’s premium in order to make the sale.
  2. Customer gifts, such as a pair of NHL hockey tickets ($300), as long as they are not contingent on the purchase of life insurance.
  3. Purchasing lunch for a client who might be interested in buying insurance.
  4. None of the above is/are rebating.

3. Errors and Omissions Insurance does not protect the agent in which of the following situations?

  1. The client incurred losses because the agent gave her tax advice that was not life insurance related.
  2. The client incurred losses because the agent gave investment advice that was not life insurance related.
  3. The agent slanders another agent working for another insurance company.
  4. The agent failed to secure proper coverage for his client.
  1. i and ii only
  2. i, ii, iii, only
  3. ii, iii, and iv only
  4. all of the above

Zig Ziglar, an American motivational speaker and author, is quoted as saying, “The most important persuasion tool you have in your entire arsenal is integrity.”
