Canada's first online life agent licensing system

Eight things to know about getting licensed on the Internet

Here's good news for Ontario's life agents. Now you can save time when you need to renew or upgrade your life agent licence. Recognizing that time is money, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) has developed Canada's first online licensing system for life agents. It's convenient – it's fast – and most of all it's secure. FSCO estimates that it takes an average of 15 minutes to renew or upgrade your licence electronically. So here's what you need to know:

Online Licensing

Visit www.fsco.gov.on.ca
This web site is available to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as an option for renewing your licence.

What you need before you log on
You will need to have the following information handy:

  1. your current Level I (if you're upgrading to a Level II) or Level II licence
  2. your home and business addresses
  3. your continuing education credits
  4. the name of your errors and omissions insurance company, and your policy number, and
  5. your examination date, location and marks (if you're moving from Level I to Level II).

If you're renewing, or moving from Level I to Level II at the time your current licence expires, you will need a valid VISA, MasterCard or American Express credit card in your name.

Renewals and upgrades
You can automatically renew your Level II agent licence, or move from a Level I to Level II. There is no additional fee to complete this transaction electronically. In the future, FSCO expects to expand the e-licensing system to allow access to new Level I life agents.

Step-by-step instructions
From the drop-down menu on the left side of the FSCO web site home page,

  • choose "Licensing", then "Licensing" again
  • then "Agents Licensed in Ontario - Full Listing"
  • enter your last name in the Agent Last Name field and click "Search"
  • from the results, click on the "Agent Licence No." to the left of your name, and the system will begin to guide you through the licensing process.

Security
Advanced security features in the system help prevent unauthorized use of the information you provide. For maximum security, you need a 128-bit encryption in your browser. To obtain information about this, consult the "Help" function in your browser or phone your

Internet service provider. Also, your computer must be capable of running either Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, or Netscape Navigator 4.77 or higher. To protect your credit card information, a certified third party payment company processes this information on behalf of FSCO.

You're ready to go!
Your licence renewal as a Level II agent or your move from Level I to Level II will be effective as soon as you complete the on-line application and pay your licensing fee.

Proof of updated licence
Once you have successfully renewed your licence or moved from Level I to Level II (either on-line or through a paper application), the agent licensing information on the FSCO website will be updated immediately and will prove that you hold a valid life agent licence. However, if you still wish to have a paper licence, you can request it when completing your Internet application.

Questions
If you have questions, want details on how the online agent licensing system works, or need a copy of the paper application form (it has recently been updated), go to the FSCO web site and click under "What's New" and then "Forms".
