Full Member


Qualification

  • Member must show proof of Errors & Omissions insurance at the point of application for membership.
  • The member must be employed within the insurance or financial industry.
  • Full members currently hold themselves out to the public as a practicing financial planner/insurance advisor.

Maintaining Membership

  • Members are required to earn a minimum of 30 CE credits each calendar year, of which one credit must be from a recognized Ethics program. Each hour of CE credit approved by Advocis qualifies for CE credit. Any deficiency in one year must be made up by the next year in addition to the full year's requirement.
  • The member must agree to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct as set down by Advocis/CLU Trustees.

Voting Privilieges

  • Voting privileges with The Financial Advisors Association of Canada.
  • Voting privileges with the Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters of Canada where the member holds the CLU designation.

Associate Member


Qualification

  • A member who does not meet all the requirements to be a Full Member of Advocis.
  • A member who has an interest in working or is actively employed in the financial or insurance industry.

Maintaining Membership

  • The member must agree to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct as set down by Advocis/CLU Trustees.
  • By a motion, the Trustees agreed that every CLU is required to acquire at least 30 hours of continuing education each calendar year. Those CLUs who are retired and who have no direct client contact are exempt from this requirement.

  • Voting privileges with the Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters of Canada where the member holds the CLU designation.

Manager


Advocis members in this category receive additional membership in GAMA International Canada and an affiliate membership in GAMA International (GI).

Note: To facilitate receiving the affiliate membership, your first and last name and Advocis ID number are provided to GI, an entity located in the United States. As a result, the personal information provided to GI may be accessible by that country's regulatory authorities in accordance with the law of that jurisdiction.

Qualification

  • A member who is a professional who is in a leadership role in management within the financial services industry.
  • A member whose role involves any of the following key concepts:
    • Coaching & leadership
    • Business development (including  marketing, practice management, compliance and technology)
    • Training and education
    • Recruitment, selection and retention

1. Licensed Manager

  • Must meet the above-mentioned general Manager membership criteria;
  • Must currently hold a life insurance licence, a mutual funds licence or a securities licence;
  • Must be currently practicing and have an active client base;
  • Must have advisors reporting to them;
  • Must have Errors & Omissions insurance in place at time of application for membership.

2. Unlicensed Manager

  • Meets the above-mentioned general Manager membership criteria;
  • Does not currently hold a life insurance licence, a mutual funds licence or a securities licence;
  • Is not practicing or have an active client base;
  • Must not have advisors reporting to them;
  • Works in a head office staff position.

Maintaining Membership

  • Licensed and Unlicensed Managers are required to earn a minimum of 30 CE credits each calendar year, of which one credit must be from a recognized Ethics program. Each hour of CE credit approved by Advocis qualifies for CE credit. Any deficiency in one year must be made up by the next year in addition to the full year's requirement.
  • Licensed Managers are required to maintain active E & O insurance coverage.
  • Licensed and Unlicensed Managers are required to abide by the Advocis/CLU Institute Code of Professional Conduct.

Qualification

  • A member who is in the first four years of the start of their career as a financial advisor providing services to a client base.
  • The member is in the business of providing financial services, whether or not they are licensed, and that has been a source of income for less than four years.

Limitations

  • A member is limited to a maximum of four consecutive years in this category.

Required Documents

  • The policy number and date cycle of Errors & Omissions insurance
  • New Advisor applicants must indicate the start date of their career as a financial advisor or the date they received their licence, on their application for membership under the New Advisor affirmations section of the application form.

Membership Maintenance

  • The member must agree to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct as set down by the CLU Trustees. New Advisors will be required to re-apply for this category annually.
  • New Advisors will be expected to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct as set down by Advocis/CLU Trustees.
  • Members are required to earn a minimum of 30 CE credits each calendar year, of which one credit must be from a recognized Ethics program. Each hour of CE credit approved by Advocis qualifies for CE credit. Any deficiency in one year must be made up by the next year in addition to the full year's requirement.

Qualification

  • A member who provides information on life insurance, living benefits, retirement and investments services, group insurance or tax and estate planning.
  • A member who provides knowledgeable product, marketing, sales and service support to advisors, brokers and/or inter-corporate representatives.

1. Licensed Consultant/Specialist

  • Must meet the above mentioned general Consultant/Specialist Membership criteria;

2. Unlicensed Consultant/Specialist

Full-time Student


Qualification

  • A Full-time Student must be ineligible for Full and Associate membership.
  • A Full-time Student is enrolled in a full-time course of study related to the financial services industry at a recognized post-secondary institution.
    OR
  • A Full-time Student is an individual enrolled in Advocis' LLQP who is not yet licensed and who is entering the financial services industry for the first time.

Limitations

  • Full-time Students are not currently licensed or practicing to an active client base.
  • Full-time Students are required to advise Advocis when they have graduated from their full-time study program (recognized post-secondary institution related to the financial services industry).
    OR
  • A Full-time Student will remain a student until they pass Advocis' LLQP examination. Upon passing the Advocis' LLQP examination students are automatically moved to the New Advisor Year One category.

Required Documents

  • An applicant who seeks to be registered as a student must submit one of the following satisfactory forms of evidence of enrolment in the particular college certificate program:
  1. Transcript
  2. Enrolment confirmation
  3. Registrar signature/written confirmation

Life Member


Qualification

The member meets the following criteria:

  • The member has not had a break in membership and has been a member in good standing in LUAC, CAIFA, CAFP and/or Advocis for 25 years.
  • The member is 65 years of age or older.
  • The member is no longer practicing and does not hold themselves out to the public as practicing.
  • The member is designated.
  • The member has performed 10 years of exceptional service for LUAC, CAIFA, CAFP and/or Advocis as a volunteer, board member, moderator or chapter chair.

Required Documents

  • Completed membership application form and with signed applicable Life Member affirmations.
  • A covering letter describing their experiences with LUAC, CAIFA/CAFP or Advocis.
  • A copy of their birth certificate, driver's licence and/or passport.

Maintaining Membership

  • The member agrees to observe and follow the principles of the Advocis/CLU Institute Code of Professional Conduct.
  • The member does not require E&O coverage.
  • The member is not required to meet Advocis continuing education requirements.

Fee-Reduced Member


Qualification

  • Advocis members who may have recently had a life change that has resulted in a recent income interruption, may apply for Fee-Reduced Membership with Advocis.
  • Applicants for the Fee-Reduced Membership are required to apply to the Associate Registrar for this category.
  • Associate Members, Designated and Non-Designated Full Members may apply for this category. All other categories do not qualify.
  • Applicants will also be required to demonstrate their reasons for applying for this membership category.
  • Members can apply for Fee-Reduced Membership on the basis of one of the following grounds:
    • Maternity/Parental Leave
    • Medical Grounds/Necessity

Required Documents

Applicants for Fee-Reduced Membership will be required to submit documentation to substantiate the change in their financial situation, which would affect their ability to pay full annual membership dues. The following documentation is required:

Reason for Fee Reduction Documentation Required
Maternity/Parental Leave Child’s birth certificate, adoption papers or photo health card
Medical Necessity/Grounds Medical report or written confirmation from a physician

Limitations

  • Members must reapply annually to remain in this category.
  • Members are eligible for one consecutive renewal of their fee-reduced status with a maximum of three years of fee-reduced status during the lifespan of their membership with Advocis.

Maintaining Membership

  • Members who have applied for and received the fee-reduced category may apply for exemption from the continuing education requirement for the year.
  • By a motion, the Trustees agreed that every CLU is required to acquire at least 30 hours of continuing education each calendar year. Those CLUs who are retired and who have no direct client contact are exempt from this requirement.
  • Members who belong to the Fee-Reduced category must show proof of having either Full Errors & Omissions coverage or proof that their coverage is dormant.
  • Members in this category are required to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct as set down by the CLU Trustees.
